HUS Acamedic is HUS’s secure, audited environment (SPE, secure processing environ-ment) that complies with secondary law regulations in Finland. Each research project in HUS Acamedic is provided with its own processing environment. Each processing envi-ronment is isolated from others with no connections between them.
HUS Acamedic operates in a web browser. It is cloud-based and built on Microsoft Azure.
The usage costs for an individual processing environment in HUS Acamedic consist of monthly license fees, Azure usage fees, and potential development costs.
The usage costs for HUS Acamedic range from €70 to €30,000 per month.
For external HUS users or HUS research projects not under secondary law requirements, the setup and deployment of a HUS Acamedic user environment are typically charged at an hourly rate of €106.95.
License fees for using HUS Acamedic are charged per user per processing environment. The license fee is €34.78 per month for HUS employees and €52.08 per month for exter-nal users. If Azure DevOps is used, the license fee is €57.47 per month per user. Access to HUS Acamedic is not granted automatically due to license costs but based on applications and needs.
The costs for each processing environment in HUS Acamedic are determined by Azure us-age, which depends on factors such as the amount of data and the level of usage. Microsoft Azure calculators available online can provide indicative cost estimates based on the in-tended use of the processing environment. A budget limit can also be set for Azure costs. Data costs in Azure are approximately €30 per TB per month.
Processing environments can be developed according to research needs. Development and customization are billed based on actual work performed.
It is not advisable to grant access to the entire research team due to license costs. Access should be granted only to those who will actively work in the processing environment. It is also recommended to activate and deactivate access based on need throughout the re-search lifecycle.

Example 1
1 PhD researcher and a principal investigator, using a .csv text dataset pro-cessed in Windows Excel or SPSS. The PhD researcher has an external (EXT) license, and the principal investigator has a HUS license.
License costs: HUS €34.78 + EXT €52.08 = €86.86 per month. Azure usage: €15 per month. Total: €86.86 + €15 = €101.86 per month.

Azure usage: €50 per month. Total: €275.80 per month.

3 external researchers, 3 HUS researchers, using imaging data and .csv data, totaling 30 TB. Imaging data is processed with GPU power.
Azure usage due to data volume: €1,800 per month. Data volume accounts for 90% of costs. Computing resources usage: €100 per month. EXT €52.08 x 3 + HUS €34.78 x 3 = €260.58

International research. 15 researchers, 10 external researchers, 5 HUS researchers, using .csv data. Data is processed with AI models to create new models for disease detection and/or its markers.
